2014 Honorary Chairman Announced

The Festival of Trees Board of Directors is pleased to announce that John Darin, President of English Gardens is the 2014 Honorary Chairman of the Festival of Trees Event.

JohnDarin150John Darin is President and Co-Owner of English Gardens, a family-owned nursery, garden center, florist and landscaping retailer in Metro Detroit. The company was founded in 1954, as a partnership of three brothers-in-law: John Darin, Andrew Donatiello and Henry Vespa.

Those three worked closely for 16 years until Andrew Donatiello retired from English Gardens in 1970. Three years later, Darin’s son, John, became the first of the founders’ children to start working full-time for the company.

John studied pre-law and business at Michigan State University, where he noted that tropical plants were becoming a popular household accessory. Predicting the public’s imminent demand for a full-service nursery and garden center — and the potential for English Gardens to fulfill this role — John joined forces with his father and uncles full-time in 1973.

In addition to being a long time supporter of Festival of Trees, John is involved in numerous industry and professional organizations. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Forgotten Harvest, past Governor of the American Nursery & Landscape Association; and past President of Pine Lake Country Club.
